SG SALVAGE – the only Commercial Diving Company in Djibouti and the Horn of Africa – has passed a comprehensive Audit by DNV to be awarded certification as recognised external specialists for In-Water Survey of Ships.

DNV Senior Surveyors visited SG SALVAGE Offices in Dubai and (remotely) Djibouti and conducted a thorough audit of the Quality Management System, diving procedures, equipment and facilities, having previously witnessed a ‘live’ practical demonstration on a DNV classed vessel in Djibouti.

This DNV Certification adds to SG SALVAGE’s ABS and RINA certifications for in-water survey specialists. Both ABS and RINA certificates have been held since 2018 and both have recently been extended for another 3 years after successful recertification audits.

As well as these new Class Certificates, SG SALVAGE has been certified to the latest Quality Standard ISO 9001:2015 since 2014 – a much sought-after international ISO standard awarded to well-organised, quality companies who successfully manage the risks & opportunities affecting their business, ultimately leading to improved services and cost efficiencies that are passed onto satisfied customers.

SG SALVAGE Commercial Diving

SG SALVAGE, and its owning entity Sovereign Global Djibouti, have been supplying Commercial Diving and Offshore Support Services in Djibouti and the surrounding Horn of Africa since 1999. Over these years, they have built strong and trusting relationships with local businesses, shipowners and Djiboutian Authorities, enabling them to complete even the most difficult and complex tasks on time and on budget.

With Djibouti being a strategic hub in the region, SG SALVAGE is able to serve customers throughout the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden regions. Their unique position within the local market gives them an in-depth understanding of local business infrastructure & nuances, allowing them to develop efficient and cost-effective processes to get the job done with maximum client satisfaction.

With an average of almost 50 vessels a day calling at Djibouti, SG SALVAGE offers comprehensive packages for shipping clients including offshore support services, underwater inspection, hull cleaning and propeller polishing, hull maintenance and search & recovery of lost items. They also specialise in marine salvage, having removed several 200 plus ton shipwrecks from Djiboutian Ports, and re-sinking them to make artificial reefs, helping to protect the rich and diverse marine ecosystem that exists in the region.

SG SALVAGE and their client, CREOCEAN, have completed a coral transplantation project in the Doraleh area of Djibouti (November 2019).
SG SALVAGE were requested to help with this delicate environmental project after an environmental impact study revealed a substantial amount of coral was under threat from the building of Djibouti’s new water desalination plant at Doraleh.
Djibouti is home to one of the biggest unspoilt fringing coral reefs in Africa, and it is an important contributor to the natural ocean ecosystem, the local artisanal fishing industry and the source of pleasure for a growing tourist industry.
After an initial feasibility study was conducted in July 2019, coral colonies were carefully excavated & removed from the path of the planned seawater intake and brine discharge pipes, safely transported to a protected new recipient site, and finally expertly transplanted to ensure their future survival.

Sovereign Global Djibouti’s Commercial Diving arm – SG SALVAGE – has successfully completed a barge sling-lift onto a special purpose carrier in Djibouti Port.
The operation involved lifting a 360-ton barge into the cargo hold of a special-purpose vessel specifically designed for lifts such as these.

Barge being lifted out of the water – Djibouti Port

Once the Dive Supervisor has discussed the Dive Plan, Risk Assessment and Safe System of Work with the client, the Dive Team first conducted a survey of the
barge to ensure the belly slings could be placed safely in the most effective positions. Parts of the barge hull were then cleaned to ensure the slings would
not be damaged during the lift, and protective sleeves were correctly positioned at the barge corners to support the lift.

The SG SALVAGE Dive Supervisor enjoyed excellent planning and communication with the client’s Project Managers, and the task was completed quickly and efficiently with minimal
cost and 100% satisfaction to the client.

Barge being lifted into cargo hold

This successful task builds upon the wealth of experience SG SALVAGE has operating in Djibouti since 1999, providing vital Commercial Diving Services to the
maritime industry including Wreck Removal, Salvage, Underwater Surveys (RINA and ABS class certified), Hull Maintenance, Inspection & Cleaning, Jetty/quay Construction &
Maintenance, Seabed Surveys and Search & Recovery Operations. SG SALVAGE would like to thank all its crew and divers whose dedication and loyalty helped make this
project a success, and we look forward to continued growth in this high-demand, specialist area.

Djibouti is a small state in the horn of Africa with great natural, cultural and anthropological wealth. Djibouti attracts more and more travelers. Dolphin Excursions had the pleasure of hosting “Le Figaro travel magazine” for a two-week adventure and documentary making through the country. Award winning photographer Greg le Coeur and tv presenter and film maker Jean-Bernhard Carillet had the opportunity to visit Lac Abbe, Lac Assal, The grand Barra and film the whalesharks that visit the Gulf of Tadjoura from October – January.

Celine Monfort, manager of Dolphin Excursions was in Paris for a one-hour live interview that discussed the visit of Le Figaro to Djibouti. The interview was broadcasted on the 15th of March and gives a great impression of what visitors can expect when travelling this beautiful country. There will be a follow up on the show in August with a multiple page article in the travel magazine of Le figaro”.
SG (UK) is delighted to announce that it has been successful in winning a place on the Conflict, Stability & Security Fund (CSSF) Framework Retender 2018/19. Only the successful scoring suppliers have been invited onto the new framework. The tender is expected to last 2 years with two optional extensions of 1 year each. CSSF was created to tackle fragility in conflict affected countries at the direction of UK’s national Security Council and to encourage departments such as FCO, DFID and MOD to work more closely together. This remains an important aspiration. CSSF has supported stabilisation in Iraq, Libya, build more resilient communities in Jordan and Lebanon and deployed UK military personnel to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Somalia. SG (UK) to date has provided strategic defence advisoryservices including the provision of expert senior former UK military and diplomatic personnel to sovereign states in Africa and we hope to continue providing more services over the next 2 years as part of the CSSF framework renewal.

SG (UK) Managing Director, Jordan Wylie commented, ‘We are delighted to continue supporting the UK government in complex and challenging environments around the world, we have extensive experience across Africa and the Middle East as well as an extensive client and partner base in some of the most remote parts of the planet that we are confident will be of great value to the UK and their interests overseas’.

Sovereign Global’s Commercial Diving arm – SG SALVAGE – has successfully removed a sunken barge from the Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port (DMP) in Djibouti.

Construction barge prior to sinking

Length：40m Width：13.6m Depth：2.5m

Full load draught：1.5m Full load displacement：593t

Net tonnage：315t Gross tonnage：375t

Having already removed two 200 ton barges earlier in 2018 from Djibouti’s northern Tadjourah Port, SG SALVAGE was contracted for this task because of their 100% success rate, and their
professional and safe approach to solving complicated maritime tasks.

The wreck was a construction barge that had been used during the construction of DMP, and because it was causing an obstruction to the building of a
new port adjacent to DMP, it had to be removed and re-sunk further down the coast. With an in-water weight of approximately 250 tons and sunk in 30 meters of water,
she was heavier and deeper than anything SG SALVAGE had attempted to lift previously, and this raised several challenges along the way.

SG SALVAGE Commercial Diver

Having capsized as she sunk, 210 tons of Air Lift Bags (ALBs) were attached to the barge’s inverted bollards with chain and long bridle slings designed to raise the barge 7m off the seabed.
This task was complicated by the huge stiction forces encountered where parts of the barge had sunk deep into the sticky mud on the seabed.

To overcome this challenge, the SG SALVAGE’s professional commercial divers injected high volumes of compressed air into compartments and tanks they had located within
the barge hull. With the barge hull in very poor condition, extensive leak-stopping had to be conducted to seal the compartments and keep the injected air inside.

210 tons of Air Lift Bags were attached to the wreck

The final step of the lift was to cut a thick anchor cable with a hydraulic grinder which was holding the barge fast to the seafloor.

Work involved cutting an anchor cable with a hydraulic grinder

Once the wreck had been lifted, it was towed by SG SALVAGE Dive Support Vessel ‘MV MURU’ and re-sunk further down the coast to make an artificial reef.
The same was done to the Tadjourah barges removed earlier in 2018, and already the reef has attracted a multitude of different fish species including emperor, snapper,
barracuda, lionfish, scorpion fish, stone fish, sweet lips and mackerel.

This latest task adds to over 10 years of experience SG has providing vital Commercial Diving Services to the maritime industry including Wreck Removal, Salvage,
Underwater Surveys (RINA and ABS class certified), Hull Maintenance, Inspection & Cleaning, Jetty/quay Construction & Maintenance, Seabed Surveys and Search & Recovery Operations.

SG SALVAGE would like to thank all its crew and divers whose dedication and loyalty helped make this project a success, and we look forward to continued growth in this high-demand, specialist area.
