BEACH ENVIRONMENTAL ‘CLEAN-UP DAY’ IN DJIBOUTI

SOVEREIGN GLOBAL’S (SG) PADI 5-Star Dive Resort in Djibouti – DOLPHIN EXCURSIONS – are this year celebrating 20 years of service to recreational divers and the environment, helping keep Djiboutian beaches and oceans clean and protected since 1999.

On 25th February 2019, staff and volunteers at DOLPHIN EXCURSIONS conducted the latest of their regular Beach Environmental Clean-Up Days on Maskali Island, a popular beach, diving and snorkelling site a few miles offshore the Djiboutian Coast.  During the clean-ups, staff and volunteers remove garbage from the beach and also the coral reefs using divers.

SG staff at DOLPHIN EXCURSIONS organise beach clean-ups approximately every 4 months or so and are supported by international organisations such as ‘PADI Aware’ and ‘Un Ocean de Vie’.  The clean-ups are followed by a fun day diving or snorkelling in some of the most beautiful and unspoilt coral reefs in the world, and clean-up volunteers receive a special discount for taking part.

The Clean-Ups are also a great way to get locals and other people engaged in environmental protection, and quite often the teams are joined by other people on the beach and even the Djiboutian Coast Guard.

During this last clean-up 30 volunteers collected 2 full skiffs of rubbish – weighing approximately 0.5-1 ton.  Most of this rubbish is very damaging to the environment, reefs and marine life, and includes plastic bottles, lights tubes (which fishermen leave behind on the islands) and other scrap metal from boats.  The trash was loaded into DOLPHIN skiffs and taken back to shore for safe disposal.

If you’d like to get involved in our next Beach Clean-Up, please visit the DOLPHIN EXCURSIONS website www.divedjibouti.com and look for the next date under ‘Weekly Events’ – we would love to see you!
